Kākā Valley: The wider political view

“Nelson is split over a proposed plan change allowing housing development in the Kākā Valley. Cherie Sivignon looks at the wider political issues. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack has no doubt that housing is the No.1 issue in the electorate.“The biggest issue that we have coming through our door is people unable to find somewhere to live,” Labour’s Boyack says. “There needs to be more houses; people are living in cars. ”So, could the proposed development of about 750 homes near central Nelson provide a solution? It may appear so at first glance, but the plan has attracted strong opposition including concerns raised by some prominent citizens.

A syndicate of two companies is behind the venture, known as the Maitahi-Bayview development – Maitai Development Co General Partner Ltd and Bayview Nelson Ltd. The residential development is earmarked for a 287ha site about 3km from the Nelson CBD, stretching from Atawhai over the hills and down through Kākā Valley, which is linked to Maitai Valley…”
